The Satellite Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean in the framework of the Global Disability Summit will be held virtually on February 10, 2022 to promote the rights of persons with disabilities. This event, organized by the Government of the Republic of Panama, the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities of the Organization of American States (CEDDIS-OAS), the Department of Social Inclusion of the OAS, the International Disability Alliance (IDA), the Latin American Network of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities and their Families (RIADIS) and the ONCE Social Group, is a call to States to commit to a more inclusive world and assume the commitment of inclusion.
No one is left behind
Currently, according to World Bank figures, approximately 85 million people with disabilities live in Latin America and the Caribbean. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected the access of persons with disabilities to health, education, work, economy, and the 2022 Satellite Summit on Disability is critical to mobilize and promote the rights of this sector of the population and help ensure that they live with dignity. The activity will feature several panels of recognized experts with extensive experience in the promotion and protection of the human rights of persons with disabilities.
According to Juan Angel De Gouveia, president of RIADIS, «it is vitally important that we make measurable and lasting commitments to inclusion and accessibility, and that States, international agencies, private companies and civil society organizations attend the meeting and join forces to ensure that no one is left behind».
The objective of the Summit is to generate regional and national commitments and call to action multiple actors in the region that facilitate the scope and implementation of policies and programs with cross-cutting axes of disability and with clear and harmonized approaches to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the Inter-American Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (CIADDIS), the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Time to commit to change
«We hope that the Summit will result in concrete political commitments that will generate genuine change for people with disabilities and help reduce inequalities and promote inclusive development, accessibility and humanitarian action, guided by a human rights approach,» explained De Gouveia.
The Latin America and Caribbean Satellite Summit will address issues such as international cooperation for development, inclusive health, inclusive education, inclusive employment and livelihoods, capacity building of organizations of persons with disabilities in the Global South, inclusion in situations of displacement, crisis and conflict, and international cooperation for development.

Inclusive health and education, along with inclusion in situations of displacement, crisis and conflict, will be some of the key issues to be addressed at the Satellite Summit.
